COVID-19 and Our Plan to Support Educators

Like most everyone else, we’re wondering what learning might look like in the months ahead. In all likelihood, it will look different across the country and around the world. But despite the uncertainty, we are still committed to our mission of equipping teachers with the tools and learning opportunities they need to be able to empower all students to become lifelong readers. We’ve been hard at work developing digital products, recording video content, and creating new resources to support educators as we find our way in this new normal. Here are some of the ways we plan on supporting teachers moving forward.

Daily Lesson Videos
When Covid-19 first started shutting down schools in March, we were quick to respond with expanded curriculum samples and a library of recorded lesson videos on YouTube. Those videos include select weeks from our curriculum and will remain available throughout the 20-21 school year.
In addition, we released a professionally filmed library of all of our lessons as taught by our literacy specialists. Lessons will include all 8 phonemic awareness skills. Video access is available through August 31, 2021 for $79.99 per teacher per year and up to 35 students.

Intervention Curricula
On October 1st, we’ll be releasing a new curricula for phonemic awareness intervention entitled “Bridge the Gap”. Alisa and Marjorie have been working hard to make this resource a reality, and we can’t wait to share it with you!
It has been encouraging to see how administrators, teachers, and parents have come together during the past several months to get creative and deliver remote learning to students. And while it has been far from easy, and not the ideal we hope for when we think about our children’s education, we push forward and strive to do the best we can with what we’ve been given in order that our students might be prepared to face the ever changing world in front of them.
From all of us here at Heggerty, we want to wish you the best as you prepare your learning plans in person, remote, or otherwise and we invite your questions, comments, and suggestions as we learn and adapt together.
Interested in digital options
Hi Feather! We would be happy to share more information about our digital resources. Send an email to hello@heggerty.org and we can answer any questions you may have or schedule a time to chat.
Hi there. I live in Ontario Canada and am interested in your digital videos. Is there a way to get access and view them before I purchase?
Thanks.
Amy Grade one teacher
Hi Amy,
Thank you for your message and interest in the Daily Lesson Videos. Please click here to watch a sample lesson for the Primary level of the curriculum: https://heggerty.org/product/daily-lesson-videos-primary/. The sample lesson video is highlighted in blue. Thank you!
A few of us taught Heggerty remotely, Monday -Friday from March 13 2020 until late June. I can’t thank you enough for helping to bring Dr. Heggerty’s curriculum to our school and for helping our kids to gain confidence in their discovery of sounds within words. This curriculum has been invaluable to our early and intensive literacy instruction.
That’s very encouraging to hear. Thanks for sharing Lorrie!
I teach kindergarten with my blue instructional manual. We are going online only. I heard you will have access to online videos that we can purchase a year of lessons. Will these be able to upload for my students to learn lessons each day?
Yes Linda, that’s correct. We are still working out the details, but in all likelihood it will be a link that you post for your students each day or week to access the lesson videos online. Will that work for you and your students?
Hi,
My name is Michelle Stephenson. I am the Director of Literacy for the Alpine School District. I am interested in purchasing the daily lesson videos for our District. I just wanted to reach out and talk to someone about this.
Hello Michelle! I sent an email your way earlier today. I would be happy to schedule a time to review our resources with you and answer any questions you may have!
Hello!
Thank you for all of the amazing work that you are doing!
I am curious if there is a date set for the Bridge the Gap intervention curriculum to be released to the public (at least on a digital format)?
Thanks,
Jen
Thank you, Jen! We are hopeful that the work we are doing will help teachers and students during this time and many years beyond! We were hoping to release Bridge the Gap in August. However, due to the shift in focus and providing the resources for remote learning, it looks like we may be closer to September or October. We are working through revisions and edits now. We promise to post on our website and social media sites the second it becomes available!
Where can I purchase the online daily videos??
Hi Lindsey! The lesson videos are not yet available for purchase. We just completed filming the first 12 weeks of lessons and need to finish getting the platform ready. We are slated to push things live in mid-August, and as soon as they’re available, we will send an email update. Thanks for your patience!
Are teachers able to do Heggerty live with their students through zoom, google etc instead of using the recordings?
Hi Amanda,
Thank you for your question! Yes, teachers are able to do Heggerty live with student via the platforms you mentioned. We provided a helpful resource for educators to navigate implementing Heggerty PA lessons with remote learning. You can find that resource here: https://heggerty.org/blog/remote-learning/.
Where can I purchase the online daily lessons?
Thank you for your interest in the Daily Lesson Videos. You will find them available for purchase in our shop on August 25th.
I am teaching Kindergarten virtual this year. I am wanting prerecorded videos of the Monday-friday lessons. Can I purchase this from you?
Hi Cortney! You can purchase the Daily Lesson Videos for Kindergarten here: https://heggerty.org/product/daily-lesson-videos-kindergarten/.
Where can we find more information on the intervention curricula? We use Heggerty for Tier 1 but are very interested in the intervention curriculum that is being released 10/1. Thank you!
Hi Mariah! At the moment you can find more info, as well as a preview of the book, at https://heggerty.org/product/bridge-the-gap/. The updated release date is 10/8. We’re excited!
Hi. I am a 2nd grade teacher with the primary book already. Is there a real need to purchase the Bridge the gap book? What does it offer that I already don’t have in the primary?
Hi Rebecca! There are some big differences between the Primary/Yellow Book and Bridge the Gap. The yellow book can be used as Tier 1, whole group instruction if you are noticing there is an overall need in the classroom. You would teach all 10 skills in each lesson to all of your students. We designed Bridge the Gap specifically for literacy intervention. Rather than teaching all 10 skills in the lesson, you would identify and target specific PA needs. Bridge the Gap offers explicit language for teachers to use, a lesson focus, modeled skills, teacher tips and assessments. It also does more work with manipulating the 2nd phoneme of a blend. If you are providing intervention for students in grades 2 and above, we recommend Bridge the Gap. However, if you are providing Tier 1 instruction for all learners, the Yellow/Primary book is the resource we suggest. You can learn more about Bridge the Gap here: https://heggerty.org/curriculum/bridge-the-gap-phonemic-awareness-intervention-curriculum/
