Training Overview
Our professional learning opportunities provide support for implementation and highlight best practices of literacy instruction. They also give teachers and staff a common language around the curriculum, fidelity of implementation, and consistency of instruction across classrooms. Our PD team has extensive experience with the curriculum, and consists of highly trained teachers and specialists who have a passion for teaching reading.
Our Specialists
Alisa VanHekken
Alisa is an experienced teacher and Reading Specialist. Alisa taught Kindergarten, 1st grade, and provided reading support services as a Reading Specialist. She holds a master's degree in Reading and Literacy, along with an ESL endorsement and an administrative endorsement. Alisa was trained in the phonemic awareness curriculum by Dr. Heggerty himself, and worked closely with him for over six years. Alisa began working at Literacy Resources, LLC in 2013 and serves as the Chief Academic Officer. Alisa is the co-author of Bridge the Gap and the Early Pre-Kindergarten curriculum.
Erica Suarez
Erica is an experienced teacher and Instructional Literacy Coach. She has had the opportunity to work with a variety of grade levels ranging from K-5, teaching in Mexico and the United States. Erica has earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with a Spanish major from Western Washington University, a Master's degree in Bilingual Education from the American College of Education, and a Master's degree in Literacy from Judson University. Erica is passionate about dual language education and believes in providing all students with the early foundational literacy skills that they need to be successful.
Kelsi Lundvall
Kelsi is an experienced teacher and elementary administrator. She taught Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st Grade over the course of her teaching career and spent five years as an Assistant Principal/Instructional Coach to Kindergarten and First Grade teachers. Kelsi earned a bachelor's degree in both Psychology and Spanish from Washington and Lee University and a masters degree in Early Childhood Education from American University. She also has an ELA certificate of endorsement and over seven years of experience supporting bilingual learners.
Laura Castro
Laura is an experienced educator. She has had a variety of roles as a classroom teacher, literacy coach, and as a homeschooling parent. She holds a Bachelor's degree in International Studies and Spanish and spent several years in Argentina before eventually moving back to the US. Laura serendipitously stumbled into education and never looked back. She holds a Master's Degree in Bilingual Elementary Education from Quincy University and has a deep love for language, linguistics and biliteracy. Laura is passionate about improving literacy outcomes for all learners - teachers and students alike!
Lori Jurjovec
Lori is an experienced teacher and dyslexia instructor. Lori taught at the elementary level for 6 years before becoming a private tutor. She has worked with learners aged pre-K through adult. Lori has earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State University and a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National-Louis University. She is also a certified Orton-Gillingham Instructor holding a Dyslexia Certificate from The Dyslexia Training Institute in San Diego, California. Lori is passionate about providing reading instruction that is rooted in the science of reading.
Marjorie Bottari
Marjorie is an experienced teacher, Reading Specialist, Reading Coach, and Elementary Administrator. She has had the opportunity to work with a variety of grade levels, ranging from Pre‑K-8. Marjorie has earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Elmhurst College, a Master's Degree as a Reading Specialist from DePaul University and a Master's in Educational Leadership and Administration from Benedictine University. Marjorie had an opportunity to work with and learn from Dr. Michael Heggerty, who served as her mentor when receiving her administrative degree. Marjorie joined Literacy Resources in 2018 and is the co-author of Bridge the Gap and the Early Pre-Kindergarten curriculum.
Oh my God, it was the best PD we've ever had! All the teachers were complimenting me afterward, which doesn't always happen. The trainer was marvelous and the teachers were really engaged.
